ILS 503 Foundations of Librarianship

This course is a thorough exploration of the history, principles and practice of library science. The American Library Association code of library ethics was stressed and this became a basis of all other study.

ILS501 Introduction to Information Science and Technology

This course ranged from bits and bytes to formulating Boolean searches and evaluating web sites. As a final project, my partner and I created, The Advisory web page.

ILS504 Reference and Information Resource Services

I learned about both print and electronic reference sources and gained knowledge in the use of these sources by completing extensive practical exercises. The importance of performing a comprehensive reference interview was stressed.

ILS506 Information Analysis and Organization

I learned through practice about Cutter, Dewey and Library of Congress methods of organizing library material.

ILS519 Acquisitions and Development of Library Information Resources

I developed skills in evaluating and developing a collection. We were introduced to how and where to acquire materials which included working with vendors and purchasing networks. I learned where to find information on emergency damage control procedures to protect collections. A project completed as part of this course: Evaluation of a Young Adult Collection .

ILS560 College and University Libraries

This course was a comprehensive study of the history and current practices in academic libraries. As a final project, I explored how the libraries have incorporated technology into the physical plant. Incorporating Information Technology in Academic Libraries .

ILS565 Library Management

In this class we explored both the practical and theoretical sides of management. A valuable practical exercise was to find the annual cost per patron for branch library services.

ILS604 Advanced Reference Services

This was an in-depth exploration of electronic reference sources and services. From the resources provided by classmates, a fellow student and I collected an annotated webliography of current trends in the field. Advanced Reference Webliography.

ILS655 Digital Libraries

I gained experience in evaluating existing digital libraries and created a digital library, the Branch After Hours.

ILS680 Evaluation and Research

I learned about research methods and mechanics through practice. I prepared an Institutional Review Board application and gained valuable knowledge about the ethical responsibilities involved when performing human research. I designed and performed research to discover the optimal hours of operation at the branch library.Optimal Hours of Operation at the East Falmouth Branch Library .

ILS695 Online Information Retrieval

I received intensive instruction in the use and application of the following databases: DIALOG, INGENTA, Factiva, Thompson ISI Web of Knowledge, and LEXIS/NEXIS information services. This course culminated in an independent research project.

ILS690 Storytelling Institute

A rich experience where I learned that storytelling was an art that engaged the senses. I gained confidence in owning a story so that I could present to a group of people.
